Head of Investigation, Department of State Security, DSS, Lagos Command and a witness in the ongoing trial before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, of four men, who allegedly smuggled 661 sophisticated pump action rifles into Nigeria last January, Mr. Wale Odu, yesterday, told a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, that the suspect made statements without any coercion, threat or inducement.
Odu stated this during trial-within-trial conducted on him by the prosecution and the lawyers to the accused persons named in the alleged crime.
The Nigeria Customs Service had on June 14, 2017, arraigned two Customs Officers, Muhmud Hassan and Salisu Danjuma, alongside Oscar Orkafor, Donatus Achinulo and Matthew Okoye, before Justice Ayotunde Faji on charge of illegal importation of firearms, conspiracy, forgery and altering of documents, offering of graft to government officials and importation of prohibited goods.
At the resumed hearing, yesterday, Odu while being led in evidence by the prosecutor, Mr. Ajakaiye, told the court that upon taken over the accused persons and the exhibits which includes the truck that was used in ferried the 661 pump action, his agency interaction with the accused persons was friendly and conducted under conducive atmosphere.
It will be recalled that at the last hearing of the case, lawyer to the Hassan Mahmud, who is the second accused in the case, Yakubu Galadima, had objected.
