Groups allege Senate motion calling for sack of CDS, others targeted at rigging 2019 polls

A coalition of 22 civil society groups under the umbrella of Good Governance And Change Initiative have berated the Nigerian Senate over their calls that the Chief of Defence Staff and other service chiefs in the country be sacked. Addressing journalists in Abuja, convener of the coalition, Comrade Emmanuel Okpokwu Ogenyi, accused senators behind the statement, saying they are not happy with the determination of the military to rid the country of all insecurity challenges before the 2019 elections. He said rather than asking for a change in military leadership, the Senate must first provide the necessary political support for addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, empower the youths and stop this macabre dance of shame simply because they have lost touch with their constituents. Atiku Speaks Over Senate Mace: Attack on Senate a dangerous precedent

The trending news report reveal how the Nigeria erstwhile Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the invasion of the Senate chamber by hoodlums and the carting away of the mace, the symbol of authority. While reacting to the incident in a statement from his media office in Abuja on Wednesday, Atiku described the attack as “a dangerous precedent” and “an assault on Nigeria’s democracy” by anti-democratic elements. “I am utterly embarrassed, shocked and outraged by this ugly development because it is not only a threat to a major democratic institution, but it also represents a grave danger to the survival of our democracy,” he said. Atiku said that, given the tension in the country, the timing of the attack could not have come at a worse time for Nigeria; and that using illegal and unconstitutional methods to threaten the authority of a key democratic institution is unacceptable, evil, and condemnable.

Nigerian government orders probe of Senate invasion, missing mace

The Federal Government has ordered a probe of the invasion of the Senate on Wednesday, during which the mace was taken away. Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja. The statement said the government received the report of the theft of the Senate’s mace with shock.  There were reports that thugs suspected to be loyal to the suspended Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial district, Ovie Omo-Agege had invaded the red chambers and forcefully taken away the mace. They broke into the chambers when plenary was going on, creating serious confusion and tension. Few minutes later, the mace was reportedly recovered and the hallowed chamber resumed sitting.

Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Senate Spokesperson, in a statement condemned the incident. He said: “Today, some hoodlums led by suspended Senator, Ovie Omo-Agege, walked into the Senate plenary and seized the symbol of authority of the Upper Legislative Chamber, the mace. “This action is an act of treason, as it is an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force, and it must be treated as such. All Security agencies must stand on the side of due process and immediately mobilize their personnel to retrieve the mace and apprehend the mastermind and the perpetrators of this act. “This action is also an affront on the legislature, and the leadership of the House has come to express their support against this action.

UK talk show for black women set to air in Nigeria

The Jo Maxwell Show, a talk show that aims at showcasing successful black women living and working in the United Kingdom, is set to hit Nigerian TV screens and cyberspace. New York – Nollywood movie, ‘Ojukokoro’, and three other flicks – Oblivious, The Encounter, and Tell Me Sweet Something, were screened on Saturday night at Metrograph Theatre, New York. ‘Ojukokoro’ (greed) is the hilarious feature film leading the line-up at the inaugural ‘Nollywood 3.0 Images and Stories From the African Diaspora Film Series’ in New York City. Combining the two unlikely genres of comedy and suspense thriller, Ojukokoro tells the story of an attempted robbery that goes very wrong from three contradictory points of view.
