Nigerians, India celebrates Int’l Yoga Day in Lagos

No fewer that 500 Nigerians including Indian gathered together in Lagos to mark this year’s International Yoga day celebration.

This happens to be the 4th International Yoga day celebration since it’s inception on 11th December 2014 by the United Nations.

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. According to him, “The word YOGA derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Speaking at the celebration in Lagos, President Indian Cultural Association, ICA, Sanjay Jain, said: “We encourage our Nigerian brothers and sisters so as our Indian brothers and sisters to adopt yoga in their daily life.”

He stated that, “Yoga is a holistic approach that is valuable to our health and our wellbeing. Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.

“Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11th December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21st June as International Yoga Day by passing a resolution.

“By proclaiming 21st June as the International Day of Yoga, the General Assembly has recognized the holistic benefits of this timeless practice and its inherent compatibility with the principles and values of the United Nations.”

On its benefit, he noted that, “Yoga enhances vitality, focus, memory and productivity. It relieve one from chronic ailments and improves overall health and also imparts a lasting sense of joy, peace and fulfilment.”

In addition, the ICA, President said: “Just five minutes a day can transform your life! Whether you’re seeking health and joy or peace and love, whether it’s success in the world or inner exploration you’re striving for, these simple practices are designed to help you cut through the struggle and walk through life with ease.

“Yoga in Nigeria before declaration of the World Yoga Day may have been existing in a very small way and on individual basis.

“Celebrating World Yoga Day at the premises of Indian High Commission for last 3 years and this year will certainly boost the information & knowledge levels of people thereby pave way for them to adopt Yoga in their daily life for getting the benefits as narrated above. ”
