Nigeria @ 56: Ebunam predicts gloomy future for sports

As Nigeria turns 56 years on Oct. 1, former Rangers International FC of Enugu midfielder, Arthur Ebunam, has predicted a gloomy future for sports. Ebunam said on Wednesday in Enugu while reflecting on sports development that “there is no foreseeable sound future for sports in the country for now’’. He said that at 56 years Nigeria was still living in its past glory as far as sports development and achievements were concerned. Ebunam said that the backwardness in the sports sector was worrisome to veteran professional sportsmen and women. Ebunam, formerly the Special Adviser to Anambra State Government on Sports Development, said that virtually all the sports association had abandoned the torturous path of talent discovery and grooming. “The 2016 Olympic Games clearly exposed our ineptitude to the whole world. “And we ended up with a dismal performance after much noise making both in the local and international media. “In a country of about 170 million people, we went to...

Why we bailed out Women League- Dikko

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) 2nd Vice President and Chairman, League Management Company,(LMC) Shehu Dikko has explained to thenff.com that the N10 million bailout handed to the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) was part of a solidarity payment that other Leagues have benefitted from in the recent past. Last week, the LMC came to the rescue of the NWFL with the sum of N10 million, for the NWFL to successfully prosecute the second round of the season. A number of Clubs had ran afoul of the provisions of the NWFL regulations including failing to honour three matches and were subsequently thrown out of the League. However, with the lifeline from the LMC, the NWFL has been able to restore all the expelled Clubs to the League and rescheduled their matches. The NWFL is now in a position to pay indemnities of match officials, taking the responsibility off host teams. The matches resumed at the weekend. “The N10 million is part of solidarity payment from LMC to other Leagues i...

She recalled that she had to change her place of worship which was Redeemed Christian Church of God to Cherubim and Seraphim, having realised that her life recorded no positive impacts. The respondent said that she also approached a herbalist in the course of overcoming her life challenges. Adeniyi had told the court to dissolve his 15-year-old marriage to Olayinka for alleged desertion for three years, night outing, promiscuity and talkative trait. He noted that he would have forgiven if the respondent had listened and corrected her perceived waywardness. In his judgment, Mr Ayodele Omotola, the...

Militants blow up another pipeline; say Nigerian soldier scared to death, can’t swim

A militant group, Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, NDGJM, in the early hours of yesterday, blew up the Afiesere-Iwhrenene major delivery line to UPS/UQCC, operated by Nigerian Petroleum Development Company, NDPC/Shorelines Petroleum, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. Also, acting Secretary of Gbaramatu Traditional Council, GTC, Chief God's power Gbenekama, has ...

US President Barack Obama has come to the defence of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton as she recovers from her pneumonia scare. Mrs Clinton seemed to buckle while waiting to get into a minivan at a ceremony to mark 15 years since the 9/11 terror attacks in New York, and she needed help from her security detail. However, in a phone interview with CNN, the Democratic candidate said she became dizzy but did not lose consciousness. The 68-year-old said she felt immediately better after getting into her air-conditioned vehicle. Mr Obama told a crowd in Philadelphia that Mrs Clinton had "been subjected to more scrutiny and...more unfair criticism than anybody out here". He accused voters of giving her rival Donald Trump an easy ride, saying: "Our standards for what's normal have changed. "Donald Trump says stuff every day that used to be considered as disqualifying for being president and, yet, because he says it over and over and over again, the pres...

Fr. Mbaka’s bombshell on Buhari’s govt

Enugu Catholic priest, and Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu State, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has said President Muhammadu Buhari currently works with some people who do not want him to succeed in office and are desperate to pull him down. Mbaka has been one of Buhari’s most vocal supporters since he asked Nigerians to reject former president Goodluck Jonathan in the run-up to the 2015 presidential election. The priest also said it was too early to give Buhari’s regime a dispassionate assessment, saying Nigerians should give the President more time. The Enugu-based cleric said the reason the country was yet to experience the real change being midwifed by Buhari was that some strategic positions were still manned by the same people who milked the country dry in the past. He said the president was not totally free from the grip of those who ran the country aground in the past. Mbaka, who spoke to newsmen in Enugu during the graduation of Niger Delta youths, who traine...

Has banks’ demarketing come to stay?

Just eight years after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) laid it to rest, demarketing in the banking space has refused to die. Its ghost, is on the prowl again, ready to spook the nation’s financial markets. Demarketing, as defined by Wikipedia, an online dictionary, is ‘unselling’ or ‘marketing in reverse’, which includes general and selective demarketing. The online dictionary, having looked at various definitions of the term, comes to a conclusion that the common thread in all of them is the intent to decrease demand. That has been the motive of the conspiracy entrepreneurs and professional partisans that promote demarketing in the country, to cause a dip in demand for the products of the target banks via false information, capable of rocking public confidence in the fundamentals of their targeted competitors and make them lose patronage. Though, it did not start today, recent actions of the apex bank have unwittingly let loose the genie of demarketing again. These include...

The national president said the association had written to NAIC for compensation but had yet to receive positive reply. He said: “We insured our farms across the nation with NAIC. Pipelines vandalism responsible for economic recession — Osinbajo

Once we are able to resolve that, we would at least be able to earn more revenue. Britons 'May Need Visas To Travel Through Europe'

British citizens may have to apply for visas to travel to Europe after the UK leaves the EU, according to reports. A scheme apparently being debated by the European Commission suggests the 26-nation passport-free Schengen zone, which does not include the UK, could operate a visa programme similar to the US waiver. Currently UK passport holders can travel throughout member states without having to apply for short-term visas. But Britain's decision to leave the EU has left question marks over the criteria needed for UK nationals to visit the Schengen zone. According to The Guardian, the EC is due to unveil new draft legislation later this year as part of a broader response to calls for greater security across the continent following recent terror attacks in France and Belgium. Camino Mortera-Martinez, a research fellow specialising in justice and home affairs at the Centre for European Reform, was quoted in the newspaper saying: "In theory UK citizens, as third-co...

Spot the cold shoulder trend

Just when you think a fashion item is dead and buried, like a Phoenix, it rises again and becomes a trend when you least expect it. So many examples come to mind, from flared jeans to boot cut jeans, to skinny jeans, cropped tops and so on, fashion and trends are ageless and usually recycled. The cold shoulder trend is a blast from the past and is the new cleavage. Spotted on several celebrities and everyday users already, it has already been incorporated into aso ebi styles and even office attires. This style is fun, subtly sexy and conservative without feeling contrived and the good news is that it cuts across all ages and sizes. The cold shoulder style comes in tops, shirts and or dresses; they have the shoulder part cut off which leaves your shoulder and upper arms bare and demurely exposed, thus the name “cold shoulder”. Amazingly, you can pair it with whatever piece you already own (for tops and shirts) or simply wear it like that (for shift dresses and maxi gowns). Sen...
