Zimbabwe arrests fleeing ex-finance minister at Zambian border

Zimbabwe police on Wednesday arrested former finance minister and opposition politician Tendai Biti as he tried to cross the border and seek asylum in neighbouring Zambia, his lawyer said. Biti, whose party formed an election alliance with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s main rival Nelson Chamisa, is the first senior opposition politician to be arrested in the aftermath of last week’s disputed presidential election won by Mnangagwa. Lawyer Nqobizitha Mlilo said Biti was arrested after presenting himself to Zambian immigration officials at Chirundu border post, north of the capital Harare and police had not yet informed him of the charges.

Certificate forgery: We can’t investigate Buhari’s aide without official complaint, say police

The Nigeria Police Force said on Friday that it could not investigate the allegations of certificate forgery and mismanaged funds levelled against the Chairman of Special Presidential Investigative Panel for the Recovery of Property , Okoi Obono-Obla , except there was an official complaint. The Force Public Relations Officer , Jimoh Moshood, said the police had yet to receive any official complaint to work on , and as such , they were not investigating Obono-Obla . He said, “We investigate based on complaints. As of now , nobody has made any complaints anywhere . The police do not take up cases based on what people say. “If any agency of government , whether legislative , executive or judiciary, reports any matter to us , we will investigate it. But as it is , nobody has reported the matter to us . ”

Nigerians’ll help us choose their best Presidential candidate - PDP

As the competition for the presidential ticket of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party gets stiffer in the run -up to the 2019 general elections , the party has said that it will rely on Nigerians to help the party choose its candidate for the presidential election . The National Publicity Secretary of the party , Mr . Kola Ologbondiyan said the party had heard that many people , including a former Vice -President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar ; Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki ; Sokoto State Governor , Aminu Tambuwal ; his colleague in Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo; and a former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso , were interested in picking its presidential ticket. He , however , said the decision to rely on Nigerians was premised on the party ’ s determination to avoid past mistakes , impunity and imposition of candidates . Don’t politicize Anambra airport project – Professional bodies tell Obiano

The Anambra State branch of the Association of Professional Bodies in Nigeria (APBN), said yesterday that it was unhappy with the slow pace of work at the site of the International Cargo Airport project in Umuleri in Anambra East local government area being executed by the state government. Chairman of the body, Dr. Akaolisa Ezeagu, who spoke in Awka, regretted that the speed at which the project started had dropped significantly, urging the government not to play politics with the project. According to him, Anambra professionals would not want to believe that the project was used to score political points, in view of its enormous economic significances to the state, adding that the concept of the cargo airport and the way the state government went about it initially indicated professionalism. NBA flays FG over killings in Zamfara, sets up fact-finding panel

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, on Friday, said it was perturbed over the increased spate of killings in Zamfara State, even as it tasked the Federal Government to wake-up to its responsibility of protecting lives and properties of its citizen. The NBA, which is the umbrella body of legal practitioners in the country, said it has constituted a high-powered delegation to embark on a fact-finding mission in the state with a view to ascertaining the remote and root causes of the incessant blood-letting. It vowed to invoke the full wrath of the law on any group or individuals that are found culpable in the heightened insecurity that has led to the death of hundreds and displacement of thousands of people in Zamfara. The APC governorship aspirant for Delta State, Professor, Partrick Okedinachi Utomi has called on Nigeria elites ‘living in false security of non participation’ to step out of their comfort zones to contribute to nation building. Top JAMB directors alleged for N8 billion fraud

Detectives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, are closing in on top officials of the Joint Admission Matriculations Board, JAMB, allegedly fingered in the alleged diversion of more than N8 billion between 2010 and 2015. We learned last night that key officials had already been indicted by a body raised by the Federal Government to look into the finances of JAMB in the last six years following the returns made to the government by the current JAMB board led by Prof Ishaq Oloyede. It was said to have failed to remit the money to the government within the period under review. The amount includes unremitted Value Added Tax and Withholding Tax. Following the remittance of N7.8 billion to the Federal Government by the Oloyede- led management of the examination body, the government ordered a forensic audit of the accounts of JAMB from 2010 to 2015.
